On the field, the Baltimore Orioles completed a spectacular 1971 season, with four 20-game-winning pitchers, only to lose to the Pittsburgh Pirates, led by Roberto Clemente, in a seven-game World Series.

The Washington Senators, on the other hand, completed their season in less spectacular fashion.  Upon entering the stadium, fans were given copies of Ted Williams' book, My Turn At Bat.  Since owner Bob Short had decided to move the team to Texas after the season, the fans didn't want the team leaving on a high note.   With the Senators leading in the top of the ninth, the fans began throwing their copies of the book onto the field, then stormed the field, causing the Nats to forfeit the game.

In January 1972, Bernice Gera won her suit against baseball, initiated on March 15, 1971. Mrs. Gera wanted  to break the gender barrier and become the first woman to umpire men's professional baseball.  She was slated to start in the New York-Pennsylvania League in June.

Football

In the 1971 season, the Redskins (9-4-1) finished second to the Cowboys in the NFC East, and the Baltimore Colts (10-4-0) finished second to the Dolphins.  The 'Skins lost to the 49ers in the first round of the playoffs, 24-20.  The Colts took the first round game from the Browns, 20-3, but lost to the Dolphins in the conference championship.

In Super Bowl VI, the Dallas Cowboys dominated the Dolphins. Dallas produced 352 yards to the Dolphins' 185 and racked up 13 more first downs. Miami running backs "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" , Larry Csonka and Jim Kiick, combined for only 80 yards on 19 carries. Cowboys QB Roger Staubach completed 12 of 19 passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns—including the final score of the game to future Bears coach Mike Ditka. Trumpeter Al Hirt appeared in his third Super Bowl halftime show in six years. FInal score was Dallas 24, Miami 3.

Julius Erving from the University of Massachusetts was the NBA's 12th draft pick, drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks.  Ahead of Dr. J that year were such immortals as LaRue Martin and Corky Calhoun.

On the hardboard, UCLA defeated Florida State, 81-76, to win the NCAA crown and Maryland crushed Niagara, 100-69, to win the NIT title.

In the NBA finals it was the Los Angeles Lakers over the New York Knicks four games to one.  The Baltimore Bullets didn't make it that year, nor did the Milwaukee Bucks, who had the league MVP in Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Hockey

Programming note:  Did any of us pay attention to hockey in 1971-72?
